DECISIVE FOURTH QUARTER GIVES MARAUDERS WIN OVER DIVISIONAL RIVAL LIONS

In what felt like a playoff battle, the McMaster Marauders came away with the all important 76-68 victory over the York Lions at Burridge Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Saying every point mattered in this matchup would be an understatement, as playoff implications played a big factor all game. The Marauders 8-point margin was exactly what they needed to secure a potential tie-breaker come season end, as the Lions had taken a 7-point win over the Maroon only weeks ago at the Tait McKenzie Centre.

The Lions biggest lead came in the first period as they got out to a strong 12-4 start that included six straight unanswered points. The Marauders hung in tight, with scoring coming solely from Christina Buttenham, Sarah Gates, and Jenna Button in the first quarter.

The trio combined for 19 points to close the gap, ending the first quarter trailing the Lions by five points, 24-19.

Fast forwarding past a pair of neck-and-neck quarters straight to the fourth, the Marauders finally found themselves with breathing room, and their largest lead of the game midway through the quarter. Mia Spadafora dished out one of her three assists, leading to a Buttenham jumper to give the home team a 68-57 lead.

Icing the game down the stretch, a pair of crucial Buttenham free-throws secured the win and the tie-breaker over the Lions.

Buttenham led all scorers with 23 points, and grabbed eight boards to go with six steals, while first-year guard Button dropped 18 points on 7-13 shooting. Spadafora provided critical minutes throughout, grabbing eights boards off the bench, while Julia Hanaka went 7-10 from the charity stripe on route to nine points.

With the win, the Marauders now move up to 11-7 for the third in the OUA Central division, creating some separation between themselves and the Lions who are now 10-8 and fourth.

NEXT UP: The Marauders make a trip to Waterloo, Ont. on
Wednesday night to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks who are 9-10 on the season, for yet another playoff defining matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm.
