Men's Volleyball: Marauders Top No. 1-Ranked Spartans in Four to Sweep Two-Match Series

Mac coaxed 27 hitting errors out of Trinity Western Saturday

A day after engineering a dramatic five-set win over the no. 1-ranked Trinity Western Spartans, the no. 4 Marauders dispensed with the drama in the two teams' rematch at Burridge Gym Saturday.

McMaster built a two-set lead and weathered a shift of momentum in the third, ultimately coming away with a 25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 victory to sweep the two-match series between the two U SPORTS top-five-ranked programs.

Nathan Delguidice was the match's leading hitter for a second consecutive night, and racked up 15 kills on a team-high 34 attempts. Enjoying an efficient night on the opposite corner, Craig Ireland killed 10 of 21 attempts with just three errors (.333) while adding three solo blocks for 13 points.

Setter David Doty averaged over 10 assists per set, with 41 over the course of the win.

Earning more kills than the home side with 53 to Mac's 45, Trinity Western also committed nine more errors in a losing effort (27-19).

The difference in efficiency was more pronounced from the service line, where the Spartans were minus 18 with 20 errors and two aces, versus the Marauders minus 15 (one ace and 16 errors).

McMaster also outdid the nation's top team on the block, with the Marauders credited with 11 solos to the Spartans seven, and Ireland and middle Wojtek Krai leading the way with matching totals of three apiece.

Having secured two confidence-boosting wins on home court, the Marauders will now re-enter conference play, with their next match coming Friday, January 17 at Burridge Gym against the Ryerson Rams.
