Women's Soccer: Marauders Can’t Capitalize Against 10-Strong Lions, Fall 1-0 at York

No. 8-ranked McMaster suffered its first loss of the season

A red card in the early stages of Thursday's game changed its complexion, but not the way that the Marauders might have hoped.

York (1-1) was reduced to 10 players in the 27th minute, but McMaster (2-1) proved unable to make use of its numerical advantage, and ultimately succumbed to a second half goal to suffer a 1-0 defeat in North York.

Lions rookie Vanessa Santoriello nabbed her second goal off the bench in as many games for the hosts, scoring the game's lone goal in the 67th minute to improve York to 1-1 on the season.

The Marauders, meanwhile, suffered their first setback of the year after opening their campaign 2-0 with wins over the Windsor Lancers and Laurier Golden Hawks.

Early momentum was with the home side, but that swell of energy took a hit when Jessica Lush was hit with a second yellow card in the span of less than 10 minutes and reduced the Lions to 10 players midway through the first half.

McMaster's best chance of the half came from a set piece, when Carling Goold scooped a direct free kick just over the crossbar in the 44th minute.

Despite their numerical advantage, the Marauders could not regularly impose their will in the second half, with the Lions continually flashing dangerously on the counter.

Mary Craig got her first of two quality looks at goal roughly 10 minutes into the half, coming unmarked on the right edge of the box from a corner, but glancing her headed effort wide of the near post.

McMaster was punished for its inability to craft an opener when Santoriello took down a lobbed pass from Kiyani Johnson and fired a volley inside the near post to break the deadlock, and provide what ultimately proved to be the game's lone goal.

Urgency arrived for the Marauders in the final moments, along with a slew of chances, but the finishing touch was nowhere to be found.
