Women's Soccer: Offence Awakens as Marauders Blow Past Golden Hawks 2-0

Steph Roberts and Talia Merino-Sierra struck for McMaster Sunday

Relief for the Marauders came in the 11th minute, as Steph Roberts ended a three-match goalless drought for McMaster and paved the way to a win at Ron Joyce Stadium.

The Mac captain found the back of the net with a fantastic individual effort to open the scoring, while midfielder Talia Merino-Sierra followed in the second half as the Marauders eased to a 2-0 victory over Laurier Sunday.

McMaster improved to 3-3 with the win, while Laurier fell to 1-4-1.

Not only did the effort mark the reawakening of the Marauders offence, it also saw goalkeeper Juliana Hifawi keep her first clean sheet of the season after saving all eight shots she faced on the afternoon.

Roberts' third goal of the season followed a prolonged spell of possession for the Marauders, who began to press for the opener in earnest after an initially-cagey start to the match.

Latching onto the ball at the edge of the Laurier box, the forward put her close control on display to round a pair of Golden Hawks defenders before curling a low shot inside the far post and past goalkeeper Stephanie Brooks.

With the lead in tow, the Marauders defended convincingly for the remainder of the half, with Merino-Sierra and Hannah Chau-Stacey tracking back routinely to clean up loose balls ahead of Mac's three at the back.

The task ahead of McMaster was eased in the 56th minute, when Chau-Stacey popped a free kick into the Laurier box and Merino-Sierra was alert to the loose ball, beating a Laurier defender to it and slotting inside the near post for 2-0.

From there, the Marauders were content to defend and threaten the Golden Hawks with an occasional burst on the counter attack, reintroducing Jade Smith on the wing for just that task.

NEXT UP: McMaster faces a short week of preparation before heading on the road to London, where the Marauders will wrap up the season series against the Western Mustangs on Friday, September 27. Mac dropped the teams' first encounter 1-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium on September 8.
