After conceding a goal against the run of play, the Marauders steadied to salvage a draw against the Laurier Golden Hawks Sunday with Anand Sergeant providing the crucial goal for 1-1.
McMaster out-shot Laurier 20 to 14 and forced 10 saves from Golden Hawks goalkeeper Jeff Omoregie-Sanni, ultimately splitting the points with Laurier at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The result moved the Marauders record to 2-2-2 on the season, while Laurier stood at 1-3-2.
Both goals came in the second half of Sunday's game, with the teams unable to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes on a hot day that eclipsed 30 degrees and necessitated water breaks.
Matt Walraven opened the scoring for the Golden Hawks in the 57th minute, getting on the end of a high, in-swinging corner from Lucas Cabral and scuffing a shot past Marauders keeper Tristan Joyce at the near post.
The visitors' lead lasted a mere four minutes, however, as Sergeant crafted a goal out of a seemingly unthreatening position to level the match in the 61st.
Taking possession in the middle of the park and noting the space he had to push the counter quickly, Sergeant raced 15 yards upfield before unleashing a low, pinpoint shot that caught the inside of the far post and rolled past Omoregie-Sanni for an impressive finish.
That proved to be the last breakthrough that either side enjoyed Sunday, with a late flurry of chances from both sides dying in the absence of a final, definitive touch.
