Men's Volleyball: Marauders Drop Heartbreaker in Five Sets to Gaels to End Six-Year Championship Dynasty

McMaster is headed to the U SPORTS Championship in Quebec City

The match lived up to its billing as the duel of the top seeds in the OUA, but the end result was heartbreak for the Marauders in Kingston Sunday.

McMaster fell 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 13-15 to the host Queen's Gaels in the OUA's Forsyth Trophy final to see its record-setting dynasty snapped at six consecutive titles.

Leading 10-9 in the fifth set, the Marauders were overhauled in the final stages and dodged one match point before the Gaels Joel Rudd killed to end the match at the second time of asking.

Queen's avenged its loss to McMaster at the same stage a season ago, where the Marauders claimed a historic sixth straight title on home court in straight sets.

A day after setting a new career single match high with 23 kills, the Marauders newly-crowned OUA West Player of the Year Matt Passalent had 22 Sunday. He was typically efficient in posting a .383 hitting percentage and committing just four errors on 47 attempts.

First Team All-Star left side Andrew Richardsfollowed with 11 kills, but was held to just .200 hitting in the loss.

McMaster was a minus eight from the service line, as both teams chose an aggressive approach, and committed 13 errors versus five aces.

With Sunday's loss, the Marauders are left to await their seeding for the national championship tournament in Quebec City, which they qualified for by virtue of advancing to the OUA final.

Play at the U SPORTS Championship will get underway Friday.
