Men's Basketball: Marauders Eliminated from OUA Playoffs with 95-89 Loss to Golden Hawks

McMaster led through a quarter but was outscored by 11 in the second Saturday

Diligently working their way back into contention in the second half of Saturday's quarterfinal, the Marauders ultimately ran out of room to work with in Waterloo.

After trailing by nine at the halftime break, McMaster outscored Laurier in the third quarter and pulled to within as few as four points in the fourth, before dropping a 95-89 decision in the teams' OUA quarterfinal.

With the loss, the Marauders were eliminated from the OUA playoffs, after bettering their result of the previous season by a round.

Leading the way for McMaster in his final game as a Marauder, guard David McCulloch had a team high 22 points, while shooting six of 16 from the field and two of six from three-point range. He made good on eight of nine trips to the free throw line, and added five assists and two steals.

The rookie duo of Sefa Otchere and Maliek Gordon provided glimpses of a positive future for the Marauders, and did considerable damage in smaller roles to ultimately post matching totals of 16 points.

Otchere was five of 10 from the field and five of six from the charity stripe, and added six rebounds and four steals, while Gordon was an efficient seven of 12 from the field.

McMaster opened strongly Saturday, and embarked on a 10-2 run to take an 18-12 lead after a layup by Otchere with 2:47 to play in the first quarter. Battling back quickly, the Golden Hawks narrowed their deficit to two at the end of the quarter when star Ali Sow deposited a pass from Joseph Fo from close range for 23-21.

From that delicate position, the second quarter proved disastrous for the Marauders, as the Golden Hawks outscored them 24-13 to vault into the lead at the half. Despite pulling within two with 2:15 to play before the break after a layup from Otchere, McMaster conceded the last seven points of the half to trail by nine when the teams returned to the locker room.

Digging in for the fight in the third quarter, McMaster used a strong period of play down low to pull within four points after consecutive layups from Maliek Gordon, including a three-point play with 3:34 to play, made it a 57-53 game.

The rollercoaster game took another turn when Laurier scored seven of the next eight points, but McMaster recovered well enough to pull within five at the quarter's end, when Connor Gilmore notched a three-point play of his own for 66-61.

With the teams trading buckets through the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, the Marauders were unable to completely craft a comeback. They closed within four points of the Golden Hawks twice, with a Gordon layup for 84-80 providing a glimmer of hope with 3:24 to play.

But that was as close as McMaster would come, and Laurier saw out the final minutes without much fanfare.
