Men's Volleyball: Marauders Swept in OUA Final Rematch with Gaels

No. 4-ranked McMaster suffered its first loss of the season in Kingston

After the encouragement of two wins on home court to open the 2019-20 season a week ago, McMaster met a familiar roadblock Friday in Kingston.

Rematching the 2019 OUA final against the no. 7-ranked Queen's Gaels, the no. 4 Marauders were swept aside in straight sets (23-25, 20-25, 20-25) to suffer their first loss of the season and fourth consecutive loss to the Gaels.

The veteran duo of Craig Ireland and Matt Passalent were the offensive leaders in a losing effort, each contributing eight kills while Ireland served as the team's most efficient attacker at .294.

Starting the night brightly on offence, the Marauders hit .368 as a team in the tight opening set, with 10 errors versus just three errors. But that effectiveness tailed off as the match progressed, with the team's average dwindling to .136 in the second set and .125 in the third.

More than anything, McMaster was hurt by its inability to slow the Queen's attack, as the Gaels hit .342 and limited the Marauders to just four block assists as a group. By comparison, the hosts were credited with 12.5 blocks, and out-dug Mac 18-14.

NEXT UP: The Marauders will look for a bounce back as they remain in Kingston and head across town to battle the RMC Paladins on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
