Football: Marauders Defence Grinds Blues to a Halt in 16-8 Win

McMaster held Toronto quarterback Clay Sequeira without a touchdown for the first time this season

Toronto's offence rode into Saturday's contest as the talk of the OUA, but left its game against McMaster without a touchdown and at the wrong end of a defensive encounter.

The Marauders held quarterback Clay Sequiera without a touchdown and under 300 yards passing for the first time in 2019, en route to a 16-8 victory at Varsity Stadium that swelled McMaster's record to 5-1 on the season.

With its win, McMaster guaranteed itself a winning season for the 11th consecutive year dating back to 2009.

Fourth-year defensive back Noah Hallett led his team with an interception and a total of nine tackles in the win, taking over the OUA lead with his fourth pick of the season.

Corner Nolan Putt also logged an interception, swelling Mac's team total to an OUA-leading 13 through six games played.

McMaster's lone touchdown on the afternoon came via a highlight-reel play in the second quarter, and proved to be the winning score.

Capping an abbreviated, four-play drive, quarterback Andreas Dueck found space with the play-action fake and aired the ball out to receiver Xander Tachinski, who hauled in the 49-yard touchdown despite a defensive pass interference call on the play at 7:06 of the second quarter.

Kicker Adam Preocanin rounded out the scoring for the visitors by hitting all three field goals he attempted, including makes from 38, 27 and 14 yards. With his three field goal attempts, Preocanin eclipsed Mike Ray (2001-04) for second on McMaster's all-time career list with a total of 92.

In the absence of veteran rusher Jordan Lyons, the Marauders employed a two-back system on Saturday that saw Tavian Shand flourish in racking up 45 yards on seven attempts, while Justice Allin followed with 33 from seven as well.

NEXT UP: McMaster remains on the road for Thanksgiving weekend, travelling to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens on Friday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m.
