Football: Carleton Does Damage on the Ground in 35-30 Win over McMaster

Mac’s loss prevented the Marauders from clinching second spot in the OUA

A porous first half put the Marauders on the back foot Friday, and they never fully recovered over the course of their Week 8 tilt in Ottawa.

McMaster trailed 29-13 at the halftime break and was unable to complete its comeback despite scoring 17 points in a frantic fourth quarter, to ultimately suffer a 35-30 loss at the hands of Carleton.

With the opportunity to lock up second position in the OUA standings and a crucial first round playoff bye entering play Friday, the Marauders will instead have plenty to play for when they conclude their conference season October 19 against the Waterloo Warriors at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Their result moved the Marauders to 5-2 on the season and into a tie for that second spot with the Guelph Gryphons. Holding the tiebreaker over both the Gryphons and the OUA's other two-loss team, the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the Marauders can still clinch the bye with a win in Week 9.

Mac was undone by Carleton's continual ability to chew up yards on the ground, with running back Josh Ferguson gashing the Marauders for 189 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 32 carries.

Ravens quarterback added 207 yards through the air and completed a pair of touchdown connections with Phil Iloki.

For the Marauders, Andreas Dueck completed 29 of 44 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns, but crucially gave up an interception and a fumble in the loss.

McMaster turned the ball over four times as a team, while Carleton did not commit a turnover Friday, and held the Marauders OUA-leading defensive backfield without an interception for just the second time in 2019.

NEXT UP: The Marauders welcome the 4-3 Waterloo Warriors to Ron Joyce Stadium on Saturday, October 19 for their season-closing Homecoming contest at 1:00 p.m.
