Women's Soccer: Marauders Fall at Quarterfinal Hurdle with 1-0 Loss to Mustangs

Western’s Giulia Geraci scored the lone goal from the penalty spot in the 66th minute

Sunday's quarterfinal encounter followed the script of McMaster's previous meetings with Western, as the two teams played a match of exceptionally thin margins.

Unfortunately for the Marauders, they were guilty of making the game's first costly mistake, and unable to recover as time became an enemy in the waning minutes.

Forced to challenge Western's onrushing Giulia Geraci as a misjudged back pass headed her way in the 66th minute, McMaster goalkeeper Juliana Hifawi clipped the forward and was shown the yellow card while the Mustangs were awarded the opportunity to break a 0-0 deadlock from the penalty spot.

Geraci duly stepped up and dispatched the spot kick to give Western the 1-0 lead, which ultimately stood as Sunday's final score and sent the Mustangs to the OUA Final Four while eliminating the Marauders from the playoffs.

It was a cruel fate for Hifawi, who made four saves in the loss and kept the visitors within striking distance down the final stretch.

McMaster took five shots and forced three saves from Western's Megan Girardi, but was unable to find the all-important finishing touch.
