Women's Basketball: Marauders Slip Past Lakehead

Box Score A day after soundly defeating the Lakehead Thunderwolves, the McMaster Marauders women's basketball team had to fight for the win and the series sweep Saturday.

The Thunderwolves closed within a point of the Marauders in the fourth quarter, but the defending U SPORTS champions held on for a 67-65 victory to improve to 2-0 after the opening weekend of the OUA season.

Christina Buttenham led the Marauders with a double double, pulling in 10 rebounds and scoring a game high 18 points. Olivia Wilson led all rebounders on the court with 13 in the victory.

For the second straight night, McMaster fell behind early, trailing Lakehead 17-10 through one quarter of player. However, their second quarter play was strong, outscoring the Thunderwolves 24-18 to cut the deficit to one going into the halftime break.

For her part, Buttenham posted 12 of her 18 points in the first half, matching Lakehead's Kielly McDonough.

The teams traded leads in the third quarter until a pair of foul shots with just over two-minutes to go in the frame put the Marauders ahead, building a lead they wouldn't give up the rest of the way.

While the Marauders pulled away to an eight-point lead in the final quarter, they couldn't shake the Thunderwolves, who battled back by scoring seven points over the final 2:22 of regulation to get within a bucket.

But Mac was able to lock down the hosts in the final moments, securing the victory by a fine margin.

NEXT UP: The Marauders will remain on the road for their next contest which takes place on Wednesday, October 30th in St. Catharines, where they will face the Brock Badgers. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 PM at the Bob Davis Gym.
