Men's Soccer: Marauders Grind Out Point Against Lions in 1-1 Draw

McMaster put up the barricades in the second half with goalkeeper Tristan Joyce making six saves

Splitting a pair of opening half goals, the Marauders and Lions ultimately shared the spoils as well Friday, as the showdown of two traditional OUA West powerhouses ended in a 1-1 draw at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Emmanuel Zambazis' 21st-minute solo effort for York was answered by McMaster's Juan Buitrago from a 45th-minute set piece, as the teams settled for a stalemate.

Second-year goalkeeper Tristan Joyce was a standout for the Marauders in the draw, stopping all six shots he faced in the second half as the Lions pressed unsuccessfully for a winning goal.

The initial deadlock was broken when Zambazis wove through the Marauders defensive line and slotted low past Joyce to complete a stylish individual effort.

It looked as if the Lions advantage would live to see the break, but a free kick on the edge of the box produced the equalizer just before stoppage time, as the defender Buitrago turned in the set piece.

Although it opened evenly, the second half quickly tilted in favour of the visitors, and it was only through alertness around their own box, and the tidy play of Joyce, that McMaster emerged with a point on the night.

NEXT UP: The Marauders travel to Guelph on Sunday, September 9 to play a 3:15 p.m. matinee against the Gryphons.
