Men's Soccer: Walkowski's First Goal as a Marauder Brings Mac Level in 1-1 Draw with York

McMaster and York have split the points in both matchups this season

A typically cagey opening half between two familiar foes gave way to goals and late drama Friday in North York.

After going without a goal in the first 45 minutes, the Marauders and York Lions both found one in the second, as the teams split the points for the second time this season in a 1-1 draw.

Rookie defender Jason Walkowski was the late hero for the Marauders, rising to meet captain Yunus Mollayev's high cross from the corner kick in the 82nd minute and heading it home for a dramatic equalizer, and his first marker at McMaster.

A closely-fought match throughout, there were only seven total shots on goal by the two teams Friday, with Marauders goalkeeper Tristan Joyce turning aside three of the four he faced to help secure the point on the night.

Walkowski had been a substitute on seven previous occasions in 2018, featuring often in the second half of games in his rookie campaign. He found himself in a similar situation Friday, coming into the match from the bench to make his influence felt.

The 1-1 result saw the Marauders move to 4-3-3 on the season, good for fourth in the OUA West division with six matches left to be played before the conference playoffs.

NEXT UP: McMaster returns to Ron Joyce Stadium to confront the OUA West-leading Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, September 30. That match will get underway at 3:15 p.m.
