Men's Soccer: Badgers Bag Two in Second Half to Beat Marauders

Brock scored from a penalty and a free kick to hand McMaster its second straight loss

Two goals from dead ball situations sunk the Marauders in the second half Friday, as McMaster slumped to their second consecutive defeat in OUA play.

Punished from the penalty spot, and from a direct free kick, the Marauders fell 2-1 to the Brock Badgers to suffer their second loss of the season and first on home turf at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Eric Serafino's set piece strike in the 76th minute was the game winner, with Arsen Platis also finding the back of the net for the Badgers.

Brock improved to 2-4 on the season with Friday's victory.

The home side's lone goal of the night fell to rookie substitute Daniel Vicente, whose touch from the rebound initially drew the Marauders level at a goal apiece.

With the loss, McMaster fell to 3-2-2 on the season, and is winless in four straight after opening the year with three consecutive victories.

The Badgers had the better of play in the opening half, using speed and the long ball on the break to great effect in forcing one-on-ones against the Marauders. But the visitors were unable to turn those chances into credible shots or goals, and the two teams went into halftime without a goal between them.

After a teammate was clattered in the box, Platis found the breakthrough on the score sheet from the penalty spot, slotting past McMaster's goalkeeper for 1-0 in the 57th minute.

A slew of changes saw a new-look Marauders team in the midfield and in attack, and one of the new faces was the one to level the match in the 69th. The initial shot ahead of him was saved, but Vicente was alert to the rebound and bundled past Alex May in the Brock goal for 1-1.

Level terms were short-lived, as the Badgers earned a free kick on the edge of the area in the 76th, which Serafino lifted just inside the near post and past a sprawling Andrew McCulloch for 2-1.

NEXT UP: The Marauders remain at home in a week's time, taking on the Western Mustangs at Ron Joyce Stadium on Friday, September 21 at 8:15 p.m.
