Women's Basketball: Marauders Power Past Lions 84-62

Sarah Gates led all scorers with 22 points

With their veteran stars dominating play early, and Sarah Gates picking up where they left off in the second half, the Marauders powered past the York Lions 84-62 to improve to 8-2 Friday.

Gates ended the night as the game's leading scorer, pouring in 22 points on eight of 15 from the floor, while seniors Hilary Hanaka and Linnaea Harper had 18 and 15 points respectively.

The result kept the #6-ranked Marauders in touch atop the OUA West standings, alongside the 8-1 Lakehead Thunderwolves.

McMaster held York to just 30 per cent from the floor in the lopsided win, and never trailed along the way.

McMaster raced out of the gates to open Friday's contest, with Olivia Wilson capping a 5-0 run with a bucket from close range as the home side took control in the first quarter. The offence continued to flow from there, and a pair of late threes from Hanaka helped the Marauders carry a 23-14 lead through the first 10 minutes.

Showing no sign of slowing in the second quarter, the Marauders continued to build on their lead, hitting 15 of 38 attempts from the field and five of 17 from three-point range in the first half, while holding York to just one of 10 from beyond the arc.

Buoyed by a three-of-five success rate from long range, Hanaka was the leading scorer through the halftime break with 15 points, as McMaster held a lopsided 46-29 advantage.

The home side was increasingly able to find time for its reserves as the game worked through its second half, outscoring the Lions 20-14 in the third quarter as York's shooting percentage shrunk to just 25 per cent from the floor through 30 minutes of play.

With McMaster content to see out the fourth with its reserves on the floor, and York rediscovering something of its shooting touch in the late stages, the Lions outscored the Marauders 19-18 in the quarter. But it was far too little and far too late for the visitors.

NEXT UP: The Marauders conclude the 2018 calendar by welcoming the Queen's Gaels to Burridge Gym on Saturday. That game is set to tip off at 6:00 p.m.
