Women's Basketball: Explosive Third Quarter Powers Marauders Past Gaels 86-66

McMaster outscored Queen's 27-8 in the third, building a 22-point lead

Breaking open a close game with a red-hot third quarter, the Marauders eased to their ninth victory of the season at the expense of the Queen's Gaels Saturday.

Mac led by just three at the halftime break, but exploded for 27 points in the third to take a 22-point lead by its end, and ultimately took down Queen's to the tune of 86-66.

The result improved the #5-ranked Marauders to 9-2 in OUA play, as they concluded the 2018 calendar ahead of the December exam and holiday break.

Guard Hilary Hanaka led the Marauders with 21 points Saturday, despite spending much of the fourth quarter on the bench. She hit seven of 12 attempts from the floor and three of five from beyond the arc, making good on all four trips to the charity stripe.

Sarah Gates (19) and Linnaea Harper (16) also eclipsed double digits in points for the Marauders, who shot 47 per cent from the field in the win, while hitting eight threes from 20 attempts.

After a tight start to the first quarter, with both teams pushing the pace and matching each other bucket for bucket in transition, McMaster began to pull away late.

A pair of put-back efforts from Harper swelled the home side's lead to 14-8 with 3:50 to play, and that advantage held through the end of the quarter, as McMaster led 18-11. The Marauders shot 45 per cent as a group in the quarter, with Harper and Hanaka posting six points apiece, while holding the Gaels to just five of 18 from the field.

Queen's caught fire from the field in the second quarter to pull back within striking distance, ending the half with a 44 per cent clip.

With their lead down to four and 1:25 to play in the half, the Marauders threw away a pass from the top of the three-point line, and watched as the Gaels converted on the ensuing possession. Another bucket tied things at 37, before Hanaka unleashed her third three-pointer of the half to restore a Marauders lead at the break.

Her exceptional showing in the first 20 minutes saw the fifth-year guard rack up 19 points on seven of nine shooting from the field and three of four from three-point range, accounting for nearly half of McMaster's scoring as they held a 40-37 advantage at halftime.

Signalling the dominant third quarter to come, the Marauders opened it with an 8-0 run and sent the Gaels to an early timeout with the hosts' lead swelling to 11.

Things only worsened for the Gaels from there, and a rash of turnovers late in the quarter saw Hanaka add a pair of free throws and Harper turn and lay in down low to move McMaster ahead 67-45 as the period came to a close.

The Marauders outscored the Gaels 27-8 in the quarter, with Hanaka reaching 21 points through 30 minutes.

McMaster's reserves took over in the fourth quarter, and comfortably saw out the victory to cap the 2018 calendar year on a high note.

NEXT UP: The Marauders head off for the holiday break, resuming conference play January 4 with a trip to Waterloo to battle the Laurier Golden Hawks.
