Women's Basketball: Marauders Drop Top Five Showdown in Ottawa

McMaster lost a second game against U SPORTS top five opposition

A crucial run to close the second quarter gave the Gee-Gees the breathing room they needed on home court Friday, as the Marauders dropped a second encounter with top-five opposition.

Suffering its second loss of the season, #3 McMaster fell to 6-2 after dropping a 74-60 decision to #5 Ottawa at Montpetit Hall.

Both of the Marauders losses have come to teams ranked inside the top five of the U SPORTS rankings, with the team's previous defeat coming at the hands of the #2 Ryerson Rams.

Forward Olivia Wilson led the way for McMaster on the scoresheet, with 16 points on eight of 15 from the floor to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.

Second-year guard Sarah Gates notched a double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and hit five of six attempts from the free throw line.

But McMaster was out-rebounded 52-39 and suffered through a night to forget from beyond the arc, where the Marauders made good on just two of 17 attempts.

Battling to within a point of the Gee-Gees at 27-26 with 3:31 to play in the second quarter, after Wilson drained one of her eight buckets on the night, the Marauders watched as the hosts embarked on a 13-4 run to carry a 10-point advantage into the halftime break.

That was all the cushion that the home side needed, as the Gee-Gees tacked another six points on to the lead through three quarters and rode out the final 10 minutes.

NEXT UP: The Marauders will look for a bounce back in a rematch of the 2018 Critelli Cup final Saturday, as McMaster meets #6 Carleton at the Ravens Nest for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.
