Women's Volleyball: McMaster Out-Duels Queen's in Four Sets for First Win

Middle Hailey Kranics led all scorers with 14.5 points in the win

Hurting the Gaels from the service line, and passing their way into favourable hitting positions throughout Friday's contest, the Marauders pieced together a strong effort for their first win of the season on home court.

McMaster rained down 14 aces as a group, en route to a 3-1 (25-15, 16-25, 27-25, 25-18) win at the expense of Queen's.

The win was the first of the season for the Marauders, in their first regular season action at Burridge Gym.

Middle Hailey Kranics was the leading scorer on the night, with a total of 14.5 points that included eight kills, four aces and two and a half blocks. Teammates Kamila Haase and Jessie Nairn posted matching tallies of 11 points, as the other two Marauders to break double digits in that category.

Holding their opponents to just .059 hitting as a group, the Marauders induced 30 hitting errors from the Gaels on Friday, while committing just 19 themselves.

After the two teams split the opening two sets, the night's most absorbing volleyball followed in the third, with the Marauders and Gaels battling through a see-saw period that eventually dipped into extra points.

McMaster boasted a five-point advantage at the technical timeout, as consecutive kills from Kranics and Nairn pushed the Marauders ahead 16-11. But the visitors responded with a six-point run, with Julia Wiercigroch enjoying success at the service line, to pull ahead 17-16 and set the mad dash to the finish line in motion.

That sequence finally ended in the Marauders favour when the combo of Kranics and Nairn combined to deny Queen's on the block, and veteran outside Rachel Woock found a kill for 27-25.

With an emotional set in their favour, the home side kept the pedal to the metal in the fourth, and saw it out much more comfortably to break into the win column.

NEXT UP: The weekend homestand continues Saturday, as McMaster welcomes the RMC Paladins to Burridge Gym for a 6:00 p.m. match.
