Men's Volleyball: Marauders Made to Rue Mistakes in Five-Set Loss to Gaels

McMaster made 24 service errors in losing their home opener for the second consecutive season

On a night that saw them out-do Queen's in nearly every statistical category, while coming out on the losing end of the match, McMaster was made to regret a slew of errors that tipped the scales against the nation's top-ranked team Friday.

The Marauders committed 24 service errors over the course of five sets, including five in the abbreviated fifth set alone, and ultimately lost out 15-13 in that fifth set.

With the loss, McMaster fell to 2-1 on the season, and will relinquish the top ranking in the country after a week atop U SPORTS.

Friday marked the second consecutive home opener lost by the Marauders, who dropped their first match at the Burridge Gym in 2017 to the Ryerson Rams in four sets.

Earning 66 points to the Gaels 62, the Marauders out-blocked (12-9) and out-killed (46-44) their opponents in the loss, but were sunk by the timing of their mistakes more than anything.

Andrew Richards and Nathan Delguidice finished the night as the match's leading scorers, with 25 and 20 points respectively. Leading the way with 23 kills and a .311 average, Richards was less successful from the service line, where he found no aces Friday versus six errors.

That was a team-wide problem for the hosts, who were a -16 from the line (eight aces versus 24 errors) in the loss.

NEXT UP: McMaster will look to right the ship Saturday, as the Marauders play host to the RMC Paladins at Burridge Gym at 8:00 p.m.
