Women's Soccer: Roberts Scores Two as Mac Shuts Out Brock to Advance to OUA Quarterfinal

The OUA's leading scorer continued her torrid pace in 2018

Frustration in the first half gave way to jubilation in the second, as the Marauders finally turned chances into goals, and goals into a spot in an OUA quarterfinal Wednesday.

Fresh from winning the conference's scoring crown as the regular season wrapped up, forward Stephanie Roberts nabbed two goals in the second half to lead her Marauders past the Brock Badgers 2-0 at Ron Joyce Stadium.

McMaster's win snapped a streak of seven consecutive playoff losses for the Marauders, who had not advanced beyond the opening round of the OUA's knockout stages since finishing fourth after a loss in the conference bronze medal match in 2012.

Their next test will come on the road, as McMaster heads to Guelph to battle the Gryphons Sunday.

Undefeated in their last nine matches, the Marauders have now completed three consecutive matches without conceding a goal, a span of four and a half hours of play.

After scoring 14 goals in 16 regular season games, Roberts added two more to her 2018 tally Wednesday, breaking the goalless deadlock in the 67th minute before putting the game beyond reach in the 86th.

Her goals were the just reward for a match thoroughly dominated by the hosts, who out-shot the Badgers 13-1 on the night.

Unsatisfied with the one-goal lead after 67 minutes, the Marauders kept the pressure on their visitors, and pieced together an eye-catching passing play to produce a second goal just four minutes from time.

Released along the right wing by an incisive through ball from her deep-lying teammate Hannah Chau-Stacey, Jade Smith took a few quick touches with a forward dash before laying off to Roberts, who finished cleanly with a gaping net in front of her.

There was no doubt of the result from there, and McMaster saw out the game without further incident, booking its spot among the conference's last eight.

NEXT UP: The Marauders travel to Guelph on Sunday, October 24 to battle the OUA West's top-seeded Gryphons in quarterfinal at 1:00 p.m. The two teams split the two-game season series in the regular season, with Guelph winning 1-0 at home and McMaster doing the same in the rematch.
