Men's Soccer: Marauders Victimized from the Spot, Crash out of OUA Playoffs

McMaster conceded a penalty and were denied at the other end to fall 1-0 to Waterloo

Despite the lion's share of the possession, and the chances, the Marauders lost out Wednesday after a pair of drastically different outcomes from the penalty spot.

On one end, the Waterloo Warriors nabbed the game's only goal on a spot kick just after the resumption of play for the second half, while on the other, McMaster captain Yunus Mollayev was denied by Matt Papadopoulos in the 71st minute.

The result was a shock 1-0 win for the lowest-seeded playoff team in the OUA West, as Waterloo dumped McMaster out of the conference playoffs at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Out-shooting the Warriors 18-5 over the course of the game's 90 minutes, the Marauders were nevertheless unable to find a breakthrough on the scoresheet.

After a goalless opening half, Waterloo found the lone goal of the night just a minute into the second, when Mac defender Cheikh Tchouambou was adjudged to have pulled his mark down in the box, and Sebastian Guerrieri stepped up and drilled the resulting penalty low and centrally past Marauders keeper Tristan Joyce.

McMaster pressed and probed constantly for the opening goal, and looked to have found the opening it needed in the 71st, when the hosts were similarly awarded a penalty for a loose tackle in the area.

But Mollayev's low shot to the left was turned around the post by Papadopoulos, who guessed correctly, and Mac's best scoring chance on the night went begging.
