Football: Marauders Score 17 in Second Half to Clinch Playoff Berth

The teams played a pointless first half in Saturday's OUA finale.

Offence was scarce in the face of challenging weather conditions in Windsor Saturday, but the Marauders ultimately found enough to get the win they needed and seal an OUA playoff berth on the final day of the season.

Following a 0-0 stalemate at the half, the Marauders scored 17 points after the break to beat the Lancers 17-5 and complete a 5-3 record in regular season play.

That record, combined with the result of the tiebreaker conducted between the Guelph Gryphons, Carleton Ravens and Marauders, saw McMaster finish fifth in the OUA standings and book a quarterfinal trip to Ottawa to battle the Ravens on Saturday, October 27.

Doing the majority of the offensive damage on a slow afternoon, running back Jordan Lyons carried the ball 19 times for 184 yards and a touchdown in the win, with his major putting the game beyond reach with just under a minute to play.

Jackson White provided McMaster's second touchdown on the ground, scampering into the end zone from 18 yards to open the scoring with 3:52 to play in the third quarter.

That touchdown proved to be the game winner, as Windsor mustered only a field goal and safety in the fourth quarter as consolation.

Kicker Adam Preocanin completed the scoring for McMaster with his only field goal of the afternoon.

Defensive backs Noah Hallett and Ben Cross led the McMaster defence with matching totals of five solo tackles apiece, with Hallett mustering a team high of eight combined tackles.

NEXT UP: The Marauders head to Ottawa for a quarterfinal showdown with the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, October 27. The two teams did not meet in the regular season, standing as non-combatants in 2018. Their playoff encounter is set to kick off at 1:00 p.m. at MNP Park.
