Football: Comeback Effort Falls Short as Ravens Eliminate Marauders from OUA Playoffs

McMaster trailed by as many as 25 before pulling within five points in the fourth

The offence awoke in the second half, but it proved to be too little, too late for the Marauders Saturday.

McMaster trailed by as many as 25 points before reeling off 20 straight in the late third and fourth quarters, but ultimately fell 30-25 to the Carleton Ravens in an OUA quarterfinal Saturday.

Their first round exit was the earliest that the Marauders have been booted from the conference playoffs since 2015.

On a cold and windy day in Ottawa, the running attacks dominated Saturday's game, with Carleton's Nathan Carter rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns, while McMaster's Jordan Lyons had 135 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

Marauders quarterback Andreas Dueck completed 21 of 30 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown in the loss, while Michael Bazzo led the Mac receivers with five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown.

The Ravens opened the scoring on the game's opening kickoff, when the ball tumbled through the end zone for a single point.

It was the Marauders, however, who pieced together the first scoring drive, with Adam Preocanin capping a 10-play, 58-yard opening possession with a 24-yard field goal to give Mac the lead at 3-1.

The advantage swelled to 5-1 with a safety, before Carleton roared back to score 21 points in the remainder of the half, with Carter busting into the endzone twice and Michael Domagala adding a pair of field goals.

One-way traffic continued early in the third, with a safety and Carter's third touchdown giving the home side a 30-5 lead.

But McMaster was determined to make a game of it, and began the long comeback process when Lyons put the two-yard finishing touch on an 86-yard, eight-play drive for the Marauders first touchdown of the day.

He found himself back in the endzone with 9:23 to play in the fourth quarter, although McMaster's momentum was dampened when the ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed.

Pulling within a single score with 2:41 to play, the Marauders scored a third touchdown when Dueck connected with Bazzo for an eight-yard major and shrunk the Ravens lead to five at 30-25.

But that was the last chance that McMaster would have, as Carleton successfully saw out the remainder of the clock to survive the late charge.
