Football: Disastrous Fourth Quarter Sees Marauders Fall 34-16 to Warriors

McMaster led 14-12 through three quarters before conceding three touchdowns in the fourth Saturday

Successful in bottling the Waterloo Warriors explosive offence through three quarters at Warrior Field, a fourth proved to be too much to ask of the Marauders defence Saturday.

McMaster conceded three touchdowns in the final 15 minutes, as its 14-12 lead through three quarters was dramatically overturned in the fourth, and the Marauders dropped a 34-16 decision to the Waterloo Warriors.

A 29-yard connection between quarterback Andreas Dueck and receiver Tommy Nield gave the Marauders a 14-9 lead at the 6:50 mark of the third quarter, and the visitors continued to lead at quarter's end despite a Caleb Girard field goal.

But Waterloo quarterback Tre Ford found the nation's leading receiver, Tyler Ternowski, for his 12th touchdown of the season from five yards to grab a 19-14 lead at 9:03 of the fourth, and the hosts did not look back from there.

Ford added a second touchdown pass in the quarter, this one a seven-yarder to Richmond Nketiah, and running back Dion Pellerin capped the afternoon with a 35-yard touchdown run with 2:39 to play to put the game out of reach.

With the result, the Marauders fell to 4-3 on the season, and suffered their first loss to the Warriors in a decade.

McMaster sits in a four-team logjam between fourth and eighth in the OUA standings, with Laurier, Waterloo and Guelph boasting matching records through eight of the season's nine game weeks.

Dueck completed the afternoon with 282 yards, a touchdown and an interception on 21 of 31 passing, and added a team high 51 yards on the ground on four carries.

Rookie receiver Levi Paul enjoyed his first 100-plus-yard day as a Marauder, pulling in six passes for 105 yards in the loss, while Nield caught just two passes for 54 yards and his team's lone touchdown.

Defensive back Mitch Garland led the way for the Marauders defence with seven solo and eight total tackles, while Nolan Putt recovered the team's only turnover, a second-quarter fumble by Waterloo receiver Mitch Kernick forced by linebacker Eric Blake.

NEXT UP: The Marauders complete their regular season in Windsor on Saturday, October 20, where they will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. against the Lancers.
