The Marauders hopes of building on the momentum of consecutive road wins were dashed in the final moments Saturday, as the visitors saw their lead agonizingly leak away in Guelph.
In a game McMaster led for long stretches, Guelph managed to muster up a hard-fought, come-from-behind win in the dying moments of the game, clinching it 83-80 to split the season series.
McMaster's guard combo of
Miles Seward (Toronto, ON) and
David McCulloch (Hamilton, ON) were dominant yet again, combining for 41 points.
Despite the strong performances by Seward and McCulloch, the Marauders found themselves in consistent foul trouble Saturday, giving the Gryphons a total of 24 free throw attempts, of which the hosts made good on 19.
Guelph's fifth-year guard Daniel Dooley led the comeback for the Gryphons, finishing the game with 16 points and shooting a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc, and 5-5 from the foul line.
The teams were fairly evenly matched in the first quarter, closing the opening ten minutes tied at 22.
The second quarter saw both teams take their shot at the lead right down to the buzzer for halftime, with Guelph heading to the dressing rooms of the Gryphons Athletic Centre with a narrow 36-34 lead at the break.
The break did wonders for the Marauders, as McMaster would not only take the lead after the half, but break away from the Gryphons with a 67-59 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Gryphons kept the Marauders on edge in the fourth quarter, though, as they combined strong effort on the boards with a willingness to test McMaster in the lane on the offensive end.
In the end, the Marauders committed far too many fouls to hold off the Gryphons, and the home side stayed defensively strong to overturn the visitors and force a last-ditch three-point attempt from
Sasha Simic (Kitchener, ON) to fall by the wayside.
UP NEXT: The Marauders will continue their road trip in Thunder Bay, when they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a back-to-back series starting Friday, February 2 at 8 p.m. The Marauders will play Lakehead again the following night with the game scheduled for the same time.
