Men's Basketball: Marauders Drop Third Straight with 79-64 Loss to Golden Hawks

McMaster outscored Laurier 31-28 in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

The McMaster Marauders men's basketball team dropped their third straight game after losing 79-64 to the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks Saturday.

Laurier entered Burridge Gym with a 5-8 record, having won their last two games before taking on the 2-11 Marauders.

The first quarter saw the Golden Hawks open up with a nine-point lead by quarter's end as they took advantage of the Marauders slow transitional defence.

Laurier closed out the opening half claiming an 18-point lead while shooting 55.9 percent from the field and scoring 20 points off of turnovers.

Tevaun Kokko and Ali Sow combined for 28 of the Golden Hawks 51 first half points. The guard pairing finished the game as the Golden Hawks leading scorers, while combining to shoot 8-of-13 from beyond the arc. Kokko finished the game with 17 points while Sow added 24.

At halftime, the McMaster Athletics Department honoured the 1992/1993 men's basketball team as 2018 marks the 25th anniversary since their achievement as the national silver medalists in Halifax.

In the third quarter, David McCulloch dialled in as he knocked down shot after shot, cutting into the Golden Hawks lead. The third-year guard tallied 27 points for the Marauders.

Andre Toic contributed 10 assists and six rebounds in his team's loss.

Unfortunately for the Marauders, despite outscoring the Golden Hawks 31-28 in the second half, the 18-point differential from halftime was too much for Mac to overcome as the Marauders fell to 2-12 on the season.

Up next for the Marauders is a trip to Windsor, where they take on the Lancers at the St. Denis Centre. The game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. and will be streamed live on OUA.tv.
