Women's Soccer: Late Goal Pushes Western Past Mac 2-1

The Marauders conceded the losing goal in the 81st minute Sunday to lose out to the OUA West leaders.

The building blocks of a win were at the Marauders fingertips Sunday, but the end result remained out of their grasp by match's end.

In ferocious heat at Ron Joyce Stadium, the Marauders squandered a point late against the OUA West-leading Western Mustangs, losing 2-1 to fall to seventh in the divisional standings.

McMaster (1-3-5) got on the board first, with their lone goal of the day falling to rookie Lindsay Bosveld.

Starting goalkeeper Deanna Persico made three saves on four shots, before being replaced by rookie Julianna Hifawi in the second half, who took the loss on the afternoon while making two saves.

Western, meanwhile, improved to 8-1 atop the divisional standings with the result, enjoying goals from Sabrina Denard and Julia Crnjac.

Much as they have so often in 2017, the Marauders emerged well out of the gates, with Bosveld opening the scoring in the 11th minute.

That lead, however, disappeared 16 minutes later, when Denard was brought down in the box and the referee's whistle swiftly followed, ushering her to the penalty spot where the striker made no mistake.

Despite looking the more dangerous team in possession for much of the second half, as both sides chased a deciding goal in the savage sun, the Marauders conceded in the 81st minute.

Crnjac caught the Mac back line napping, and skipped past the goalkeeper before slotting in.
