Cross Country: Raez Villanueva Leads McMaster Men to Second at UB Stampede

Marauders men top non-Division I group, finish behind only Pittsburgh.

With many fresh faces making their first appearances as Marauders, the McMaster cross country teams opened their season brightly in Buffalo, with both teams finishing inside the top five at the UB Stampede meet on September 15.

The McMaster men, without veteran leader Jeff Tweedle, were paced by their younger members and new performers, en route to the top spot among non-Division I programs at the event, and second overall behind Pittsburgh.

Mac's women's team similarly topped the non-Division I programs, and finished fifth overall.

After sitting last season out as a transfer, following his move from McGill, Sergio Raez Villanueva made his presence felt in his first race as a Marauder, finishing first among non-Division I runners and fourth overall in the men's eight kilometre race, crossing the line in 25:08.9.

Rookie Max Turek, also racing for the first time as a Marauder, impressed by following just a second behind Raez Villanueva and finishing fifth, in the middle of a three-Marauder pack closed out by Josh McGillivray.

Mac's fourth scorer on the afternoon was Jon Favero, who finished fourth among non-Division I runners and sixth overall in a time of 25:27.1, while Christian McGillivray, Dylan Alick and rookie Alex Drover completed the Marauders scoring, finishing sixth, 10th and 17th in the non-Division I group.

Rachel Faulds led the Marauders, finishing second among the non-Division I runners at the event and fifth overall, completing the six kilometre course in 21:54.8.

Another veteran, Erin Mawhinney followed close behind to score second for McMaster and finish fourth in the non-Division I group, while a pack of Marauders, Kristen Kuhn, Lauren Locco and Megan Black finished sixth, eighth and ninth to score third, fourth and fifth for Mac.

Closing out the scoring for McMaster, second-year runner Emma Waddington and rookie Alison Sippel finished 16th and 31st respectively in the non-Division I group, scoring 10th and 21st.

NEXT UP: The Marauders bring two strong units to a traditional stop at the Western International in London on Saturday, September 23.
