Women's Volleyball: Middle Does Damage as Marauders Sweep Gryphons

Mac's middle tandem of Maicee Sorensen and Hailey Kranics combined for 29 points in Saturday's straight sets win in Guelph.

Their third match of the season was McMaster's cleanest, as the Marauders produced three consistent sets on the road to sweep aside the Guelph Gryphons.

Mac hits 27 per cent as a group across the three-set match to improve to 2-1 on the young season with the 25-15, 25-22, 25-22 decision in Guelph.

Once again the leader on the scoreboard, veteran middle Maicee Sorensen posted a match high of 17 points, including 12 kills, three aces and two blocks, converting on 45.5 per cent of her hitting attempts.

Fellow middle Hailey Kranics enjoyed her best offensive night as a Marauder, killing eight of 12 attempts without an error while adding two aces and two blocks for 12 points.

With the help of a few errors from their opponents, the Marauders built a run midway through the opening set, moving ahead 14-8 after outside Joanna Jedrzejewska ended a long rally with a well-placed shot from the left. Mac led by seven points at the technical timeout, and showed no signs of slowing, crossing the finish line after a quick middle strike from Kranics and a successful wipe by Jedrzejewska.

Hitting 46 per cent in the set, the Marauders posted a total of 14 kills in the first versus just a single error.

The visitors continued to be the cleaner of the two teams to begin the second, and a pair of confident kills from Rachel Woock saw the Marauders take a 16-10 lead into the technical timeout. Their early gains were nearly undone by a late-set letdown, with Guelph climbing to within two points of McMaster at 20-18 and forcing a Marauders timeout.

But Mac recovered nicely after the break, and Woock provided the finishing touch on set point, wiping wide off the block for 25-22.

Side-out volleyball dominated the third, with neither team able to fashion any momentum until the technical timeout, where the Gryphons held a one-point lead after a Marauders service error. After the hosts snagged the next two points, Mac called time, and benefitted once again from the reset.

The Marauders responded by reeling off four straight points and forcing the suddenly reeling Gryphons to call a timeout of their own, capping the run with a Sorensen kill.

Guelph retook the lead twice before the night was said and done, but after falling behind 21-20, McMaster won three consecutive points, including kills from Sorensen and Woock, and were not to be caught from there.

NEXT UP: McMaster makes the second stop on their four-match November road trip, heading to Windsor on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a matinee contest against the Lancers. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
