Women's Basketball: Marauders Get Bounce Back Win at York

Heading into a matchup that's seen McMaster win every game since 2011, the Marauders made a stop in Toronto to take on the York Lions in their second game of their weekend road trip and garnered a 69-51 win.

The Marauders played in Kingston Friday night, losing to the Queens Golden Gaels by a score of 90-79, so the win over York salvages the weekend split.

McMaster shook off the loss in Kingston and quickly got their feet back under them as they pushed the pace early against York. The opening quarter saw the Marauders leading 19-6, feeding off of early success from beyond the arc. McMaster would hit five treys in the opening ten minutes, aiding their early lead.

In the second quarter, the Lions started operating a much more active offence and the combination of solid screens and continuous movement around the key proved too much for the Marauders, as York cut the deficit to five points as time expired for halftime.

The third quarter saw McMaster step up the pressure on the Lions and York's offence would begin to fade as the quarter progressed. After 30 minutes, the Mac lead had bumped up to 51-36.

The fourth quarter saw the Marauders soar away from the Lions and they would go on to take the win and improve to 2-1 on the season, wrapping up their weekend road trip. The Lions drop to 1-2 after earning their first win of the season the night before against the Brock Badgers.

In the first half, York had excelled at applying pressure while nearly doubling the number of steals that Mac had; yet, in the second half, the teams seemed to swap roles as it would be McMaster forcing the majority of the turnovers, and converting into points.

The Marauders got solid games from Hillary Hanaka and Linnaea Harper, with Hanaka finishing the game with 19 points, while Harper finished with 16.

Lindsay Shotbolt would lead the Lions in scoring, registering 17 points on the night.

Up next for the Marauders, they will return back to Toronto next weekend for to face the Ryerson Rams on Friday, November 10, and the Toronto Varsity Blues the following night.

Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. and can be streamed live on OUA.tv.
