Women's Basketball: First Half Lead Evaporates as Mac Falls 90-79 to Queen's

The Marauders held a 15-point lead at halftime, but were sunk by foul trouble.

McMaster traveled to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels in their first road-game of the OUA season and the matchup would be a true tale of two halves.

Leading by 15 points at halftime, the Marauders saw their advantage evaporate before eventually falling 90-79 to the Gaels.

Senior Linnaea Harper led the Marauders with 20 points in the loss, hitting seven of 16 shots from the field and two of four from three-point range.

The Marauders were quick out of the gates, as they opened up the scoring early with a 12-4 lead after shooting four of six from beyond the arc. They spent the majority of the half with a double-digit lead thanks to an impressive 47.7 per cent of their shots dropping from three-point range.

Hilary Hanaka and Harper pushed the pace for the Marauders offence as both surged to double-digit performances in the opening half against the Gaels.

In the second-quarter, McMaster found themselves in foul trouble with several of their players, including Hanaka and Harper tallying multiple fouls to their name, ultimately surrendering to the bonus. Fortunately for the Marauders, the Gaels struggled from the foul line, only shooting 66.7 per cent in the opening half and failing to capitalize on the opportunity to bridge the gap.

Starting the second half with a 51-36 lead, Marauders' head coach Theresa Burns was forced to sit forward Olivia Wilson, after the forward committing her fourth foul early in the third quarter.

Much of the third quarter showcased the Gaels battling back to cut the Marauders' lead to single digits, as McMaster faced the effect of early foul trouble, being forced to sit starters.

With the Marauders cycling through their bench, the floodgates opened up for the Gaels Veronika Lavergne and Andrea Priamo. Lavergne finished the night with a game-leading total of 29 points while her teammate finished with 24.

The Gaels tied things up at 66 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by Andrea Priamo. A few moments later, Queens pulled ahead with another three, this time coming from Marianna Alarie. Having only six points in the first half, Alarie led the charge in the fourth quarter by tallying 11 points.

It would take the Marauders over five minutes to score their first field goal of the fourth quarter, as Queens continued to pull away in the final minutes of the game.

The Marauders will be back in action Saturday, November 4, when they head to Toronto to take on the York Lions (1-1) at 6:00 p.m. inside York's Tait McKenzie Centre.
