MEN'S BASKETBALL: MARAUDERS EDGED BY VARSITY BLUES

Box Score The McMaster men's basketball team took on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday night inside Toronto's Goldring Centre, and came out on the losing end of a 92-88 decision.  The game marked the end of a four-game road swing that saw McMaster go winless away from home.

In the opening half, the Varsity Blues set themselves apart from the Marauders with their strong play on the boards. Toronto hauled in 27 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes while building a 50-40 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Marauders' leading scorer, Miles Seward, quickly got himself out of the gate and feeding off of his 29-point performance from the night before, Seward finished the first half having scored 16 points for the Marauders.

McMaster started the third quarter with active ball movement and smooth transitional play that would reduce the deficit to just three points partway through the period.  The Blues responded to the sudden shift in momentum, slowing things down and gradually building their lead up to 68-56 after 30 minutes.

With McMaster trying to cut into the Toronto lead in the fourth quarter, Marauder head coach Patrick Tatham, frustrated with some questionable officiating, was ejected from the game with 5:36 remaining in the final stanza.

In an effort to rally for a comeback in the absence of their head coach, the Marauders leaned on the performance of David McCulloch. The fourth-year man would finish the game with a team-high 32 points while shooting 57% from the field. The performance would be a new career-high in points for McCulloch.

Refusing to quit, McMaster twice got within a basket of the Blues in the final minute, but unfortunately for the Marauders, Toronto would get some clutch free-throw shooting from Reilly Reid and Sage Usher to close out the win.

In addition to McCulloch's career night, Seward finished with a solid 21 points and Kareem Collins added 20.  Reid was Toronto's top scorer with 23.

The Marauders now return to the friendly confines of the Burridge Gym to take on Laurentian on Friday, November 17 and the Nipissing Lakers the following night. Both games are set to begin at 8 p.m.
