Women's Soccer: Comeback Effort Falls Short as Mac Falls 2-1 to York

Lindsay Bosveld's 81st-minute strike inspired hope of a McMaster comeback Friday.

Lindsay Bosveld's 81st-minute strike inspired hope in the Marauders that a comeback, and a vital point in the OUA West standings, might be possible Friday.

But, with time as their chief adversary, McMaster fell just short in a 2-1 loss to the York Lions at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Farkhunda Muhtaj and Kendra Saxton had goals for the Lions (2-6-4), who grabbed just their second win of the season.

Bosveld's goal was the only one of the night for the Marauders (2-5-5), who sit tied with the Brock Badgers for the final playoff spot in the OUA West on 11 points.

Muhtaj struck early, and spectacularly, to open the scoring in just the fifth minute and raise an appreciative cheer from the travelling York faithful.

Gathering the ball outside the box and wide to Persico's right, the midfielder blasted a high, looping shot that curled over the keeper and inside the far post for a highlight-reel-worthy goal.

Just a few short minutes later, the Lions nearly doubled their advantage, when a counter saw them flash a cross through the box, but the onrushing winger could only push her shot high and harmlessly wide of the bar.

The home side's best chance to score in the first half fell to Amy Froome, who was sprung on a break by a well-weighted through ball but was just a step late, and saw the ball beaten away by keeper Tamara Orlando.

Things worsened for McMaster in the 61st minute, when Saxton got on the end of a square ball and bundled it past Persico to double the Lions lead.

York had matters well in hand until Bosveld's strike in the 81st, which reignited the match for its final stage.

Alert to an initial cross which was spilled by Orlando, the rookie striker latched onto the rebound and tapped it in to halve the deficit, sending Mac into a frenzy in search of an equalizer.

The hosts had plenty of possession in the last 10 minutes, but were unable to find the goal that would steal them a point.
