Men's Soccer: Mac Edges Guelph 1-0 to Head to OUA Final Four

The Marauders successfully defended behind Dusan Kovacevic's 28th-minute goal.

There was no love lost Sunday, and little room between the markers, as the Marauders and Gryphons renewed their rivalry at Ron Joyce Stadium in an OUA quarterfinal.

Befitting the season series, which McMaster uncharacteristically swept in 2017, the Marauders nabbed an early goal and effectively stacked behind the ball in the second half to eke out a 1-0 win and advance to the OUA Final Four.

Dusan Kovacevic was the scorer of the game's lone goal, which he potted after a misjudgement by Guelph goalkeeper Simon Norgrove, in the 28th minute.

Marauders goalkeeper Jesse Di Domenico was sharp when called upon, saving all four shots he faced to secure the clean sheet for the hosts.

With the result, McMaster now awaits the conclusion of Sunday night's match between the York Lions and Western Mustangs to determine the location of the Final Four tournament. Should the Lions win out, York would host. But were they to lose to the Mustangs, McMaster would assume hosting duties at Ron Joyce Stadium.

Opportunistic when the chance fell to him, Kovacevic showed the poacher's instincts that led him to finish as Mac's leading scorer in the regular season, where he had 11 goals.

A low cross buzzed into Guelph's box, and Norgrove could only get fingertips to it, tipping it into the path of Kovacevic, who gathered and slotted home to give the Marauders the lead.

That proved to be all that McMaster needed to secure the win, as they defended adroitly for the remaining 60 minutes, launching the occasional counter.

Tensions rose in the second half, and resulted in five yellow cards in the final half hour, with a total of six assessed in the match.
