MEN'S RUGBY OPENS NEW SEASON WITH A WIN

The McMaster men's rugby team opened the 2016 season by heading down to London and stealing a 16-10 victory over the hometown Western Mustangs.

It was a great way to start the new season, especially as Western had defeated McMaster 31-17 to capture the OUA bronze medal last year.

The Marauders saw Matt Nicol and Will Kelly cross the touch line, with Kelly adding a pair of penalty goals to round out the scoring for the men in maroon.

Kelly opened the scoring in the first half for the Marauders, who led 5-0 at the break.  Western fought back to take a 7-5 lead, before Nichol's try put the Marauders back in front 10-7.  The Mustangs tied the score at 10-10 on a penalty kick from Mark Denton, before Kelly split the goal posts twice in the final 20 minutes and the Marauders played some stout defense to hold the Mustangs at bay until the final whistle.

McMaster will play its home opener this Sunday, September 11 when it hosts Trent University at 2-pm on the 10-acre field.
