Women's Volleyball: Western Edges Mac in Five for OUA Bronze

Box Score They moved ahead with wins in sets two and three, and led in the deciding fifth, but the McMaster Marauders agonizingly saw their advantage evaporate, as the Western Mustangs won OUA bronze on Saturday.

Set scores were 25-16, 18-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 15-13 in favour of the Mustangs, who repeated as OUA bronze medalists with the win.

In her final game as a Marauder, fifth-year middle Taylor Brisebois led her squad with 18 points on 11 kills, six blocks and one ace. Maicee Sorensen added 16 points on 12 kills, two blocks and two aces, while notching 11 digs in the loss.

Second-year right side hitter Aja Gyimah led all players with 21 kills and 14 digs for the Mustangs, while OUA West player of the year Kelsey Veltman had 19 points on 12 kills, five blocks and two aces on the night.
 
All-star setter Katherine Tsiofas tallied 46 assists and 19 digs, while sophomore libero Courtney Sestric had 26 digs in the win.
 
The Mustangs were hot to start the first set and thanks to an early 7-0 run built a 16-8 advantage at the technical timeout. Despite a late rally from the Marauders, Western took the first set 25-16.
 
McMaster bounced back in the second set, getting out to a 9-5 advantage in the early goings. A couple of long rallies ended in the Mustangs favour, but the Marauders held a narrow 16-13 lead at the break. McMaster continued to hold a narrow gap and ended the set on a 5-1 run to even the match, 25-18.
 
The third set proved to be a back-and-forth battle with the Marauders holding a narrow 16-14 advantage at the technical timeout.  McMaster took the match lead with a narrow 25-21 third set victory.
 
The fourth turned into another see-saw affair, with McMaster up 16-14 at the break, but the Mustangs battled back to force a fifth set with the 25-22 victory.
 
The Marauders got out to a 4-0 advantage and led 11-6 late in the set, but the Mustangs battled back, ending the match on an 8-2 run to complete the comeback and claim bronze.
