Box Score The McMaster women's basketball team bounced back in a big way, after losing in overtime the night previous, and pounded the Carleton Ravens 73-51 on Saturday night at the Burridge Gym.
In addition to the big win, the Marauders were able to celebrate Danielle Boiago becoming McMaster's all-time OUA scoring leader for women's basketball.
The Marauders had another strong start to the game and jumped in front of the Ravens 16 to 6 off the tip, before ending the quarter with a lead of 20-13. Boiago had a strong start with eight points in the opening stanza.
McMaster kept up the pressure in the second quarter and Carleton had trouble getting its offense in gear, which combined to see the maroon advantage grow to 41-22 by the intermission. Boiago ended the half with 13 points and her last basket of the quarter gave her 1,290 points scored over her McMaster career, breaking the team record for OUA scoring, previously held by Taylor Chiarot.
With memories of giving up a healthy lead to Ottawa on Friday fresh in the collective mind, McMaster tried something new in the second half and switched to a zone defense. The zone stymied the Ravens and allowed the Marauders to grow the lead to 56-32 by the end of the third quarter. Several Marauders played well off the Mac bench, with contributions coming from Ally Schweitzer, Lexie Spadafora, and Michaela Ionni.
McMaster stayed with the zone in the fourth quarter and it helped to control the pace of the game, as Carleton wanted to push tempo to narrow the gap. By the time the benches were cleared, the Ravens had run out of time to make a run and the Marauders closed out the big win.
Boaigo scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Mac attack and ended the game with 1,293 career points. Linnaea Harper shook off a chilly shooting game versus Ottawa to score 12 points, coming from four made goals from beyond the arc. Clare Kenney just missed a double-double by scoring 11 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Top scorer for Carleton was Heather Lindsay with 16 points.
Next up for the Marauder is a clash with the Nipissing Lakers on Friday, February 19 in the Burridge Gym. The women's game will start the double-header with tip-off scheduled for 6-PM.
