Wrestling: Marauder Men Win Silver at Home Invitational

Before they play host to the OUA Championships in February, the McMaster wrestling teams brought together many of the top teams in Canada for their annual invitational tournament Saturday.

True to their form of a year ago, when the Marauders were both the OUA and CIS men's runners up, McMaster won team silver on the men's side at the Burridge Gym, while the Marauders women finished seventh.

A pair of exceptional performances in the 90kg weight class led the way for the Marauders, as Joban Phulka and Ameen Aghamirian each mopped up the field on the way to an all-McMaster final, where Phulka came out on top for the gold.
Continuing the trend of standout Mac efforts in the upper weight classes, Scott MacLellan won silver in the 100kg division, losing out to Shaddy El-Nahas of York in the final.

Rookie Ben Zahra gave an early demonstration of his talent Saturday, winning silver in the 76kg weight class while veteran teammate Ahmed Shamiya was forced to settle for bronze. Both Marauders came up against eventual champion Alex Moore of Vanier College.

Rounding out the medals for the McMaster men, Erik Joy won bronze in the 65kg weight class, getting the better of Josh Malu of Team Impact in his final match.

The lone medal for the McMaster women went to Jenna Leslie, who took silver after losing out to Vanier College's Laurence Beauregard in the 55kg final.
