Women's Volleyball: Mac Squanders Early Lead, Sees Streak Snapped by Western

Box Score A streak that spanned three calendar months came to an abrupt end for the Marauders on Saturday at the hands of their closest divisional rivals. Mac fell in four sets to the Western Mustangs in London, snapping an 11-match winning streak that propelled the Hamilton team to the top of the OUA West.

Set scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-18 in favour of the Mustangs, who drew level with the Marauders at 12-2 in the divisional standings with the win, although Mac retains top spot for the time being on the strength of set differential.

Middle Taylor Brisebois provided the Marauders most reliable offence in the loss, killing eight of 19 hitting attempts versus just two errors (.316) and adding an ace and two blocks for a team high of 11.5 points.

Early momentum went the way of McMaster, with the visitors taking the opening set when Western outside Aja Gyimah was whistled for the double tap on set point. The tide turned, however, when the hosts eked out a close second set on the second of two set point opportunities.

From there, the Mustangs surged ahead, reeling off a 10-1 run in the third frame to grab a sizable late lead at 18-11 that they would not relinquish. Another run, this time with veteran Serena Smith toeing the service line, overturned an early Mac lead in the fourth frame, and ultimately propelled Western to the overall win.
