WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: MARAUDERS DEFEAT WOLVES

Box Score On a night when the team star didn't have her best game, the rest of the McMaster Marauders pulled together and defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 71-43 in Thunder Bay on Friday night.

McMaster jumped out to an 11-3 lead to start the game, and held the lead through the opening quarter with Danielle Boiago hitting a shot at the buzzer to go up 21-8 after 10 minutes.

The second quarter saw the Marauder lead grow to as many as 17, before Lakehead took advantage of some sloppy play by the Marauders to reduce the deficit.  The Wolves won the quarter by 16-13 to only trail by 10 at the half,  by the score of 34-24.

Looking to re-establish the big lead, the Marauders stepped on the gas to start the third quarter and outscored the Wolves 17-2 to go up by 25.  Heading to the final stanza the McMaster margin stood at 55-30.

The fourth quarter saw both teams go deep into their reserves and the Wolves made a slight run to close within 18 points, but could get no closer.  McMaster regained control and, with all 12 players hitting the score-sheet, closed out the 28-point victory.

The OUA's second leading scorer, Danielle Boiago, only scored four points this night but chipped in 7 boards, 4 assists and 3 steals.  Marauder Clare Kenney scored 16 to lead the Mac attack, with Rachael Holmes adding 11.  Lakehead had trouble scoring for most of the game and was led by Gillian Lavoie with nine points.

McMaster improves to 9 and 3 in the Central Division, while Lakehead falls to 4 and 6.  The two teams will tip-off Saturday at 6-pm to complete the two-game series.
