Box Score Â
The McMaster men's basketball team made its first ever trip to Sault St. Marie, and in a gutsy effort delivered an 86-56 win over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday night.
Decimated by injury, McMaster was missing four regular rotation players and had to start freshman post Matt Quiring because of the absent Marauders. Despite the missing talent, the Maroon won the opening quarter 19-17.
The second quarter saw Quiring leave the game with an injury, further shortening the bench, but McMaster extended its advantage to 35-30 at halftime.
In the second half, Marauder coach Amos Connolly made a daring move and went to a four-guard line-up, rotating his forwards as the single post. The tactic seemed to work as McMaster scored the first eight points of the third quarter to open a double-digit lead. By the end of the frame McMaster had built the lead up to 20 at 64-44.
The fourth quarter saw McMaster stick with its small-ball line-up and the closest Algoma could get was 17 before the Marauders ran out to the 30-point win.
Top shooter was Trevon McNeil with 17 points, with Aaron Redpath, Leon Alexander, and Chris Thompson off the bench, all scoring 13.

Next up the Marauders will clash with the Ryerson Rams, who are ranked No. 5 in the national top-ten, on Wednesday, November 11 with tip-off set for 8 p.m. in the Burridge Gym.
