The McMaster Marauder basketball teams head into their final OUA contests before the exam/holiday break looking for positive results, and hoping to build momentum as they move toward the new year. The visiting Guelph Gryphons will provide the opposition on Saturday, November 28th in a key OUA Central division match-up.
For the women, the Marauders are actually looking up at Guelph in the standings as the Gryphons have a 5-1 record and are one game ahead of 4 and 2 McMaster. The grind of the OUA schedule has seen McMaster fall in the CIS national rankings from the top spot to the No. 6 spot having lost games in the last two weeks to Ryerson and Queen's. The Gryphons are unranked heading into Saturday's contest.
McMaster guard Danielle Boiago is currently the second-leading scorer in the OUA at 20.2-PPG, while her teammates Clare Kenney, Linnaea Harper, and Rachael Holmes are all hovering around 10-PPG. That scoring balance has been a team strength all season.
Guelph poses a major challenge as the Gryphons have veteran experience with three 5th-year starters and some outstanding young talent like the returning CIS Rookie of the Year Bridget Atkinson. Gryphon Coach Christin Dickenson is a McMaster alumnae and former Marauder All-Star and always enjoys coming back to the Burridge Gym.
Tip-off for the women's game is at 1 p.m.
On the men's side, McMaster is looking to extend its current win streak to four games, as the team has moved into first-place in the OUA Central at 4 and 2. Guelph is at the bottom of the division at 2 and 4, so a win at McMaster would be huge for Gryphon playoff hopes.
The Marauders have been getting solid production from Leon Alexander, who has scored 19-PPG to pace the offense. Similar to their distaff counterparts, the Marauder men have good balance as Aaron Redpath, Troy Joseph, and Trevon McNeil are all scoring around 12-PPG.
The Guelph men's team is still finding its stride in the early OUA season, but Coach Chris O'Rourke always puts a scrappy team on the floor that puts defense at the forefront. The Gryphons have been a long-time rival for the Marauders and both teams bring a high level of intensity to the court when they clash.
The men's game will follow the women's contest with a 3 p.m. start time.
