The McMaster women's volleyball team handled the Nipissing Lakers 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon for its seventh straight OUA win. The victory fortified McMaster's first-place position in the OUA West Division, with a 12 and 3 record.
The opening set saw the teams play fairly even in the early going until McMaster went on a run with the scored tied at 10-10. The Mac lead was 16-11 at the technical timeout and the Marauders kept up the steam and finished the set with a decisive 25-14 margin.
McMaster played very steady to start the second set and led 14-8 before Nipissing's Brittany Ardron got on a serving roll and closed her team to within 14-12. McMaster then forced a side-out, and went up 16-13 at the technical break. From that point the Marauders carried the play behind some nice back-row attacks from Lauren Mastroluisi and Joanna Jedrzejewska, and closed out the 25-17 win to go up by two sets.
In the third set, McMaster grabbed an early lead and was up 16-10 at the technical timeout, before Nipissing started to get in a rhythm. The Lakers closed to within a point at 22-21, but could not get the equalizer and fell 25-23 as McMaster completed the sweep.
Jedrzejewska had a very strong match converting 15 of 22 hitting opportunities for a tidy .591% kill percentage to lead the offense. Setter Caitlin Genovy finished with 25 assists and did a nice job of spreading the ball among the Mac hitters, keeping Nipissing off-balance.
As a team the Marauders played some outstanding defense, and came up with 41 digs.
Next action for the Marauders is on Thursday, January 29 when the team will host the Guelph Gryphons with a start time of 6 p.m.
