VALIANT COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AS RAMS EDGE MARAUDERS

The McMaster women's basketball team is still looking for its first win of 2015 as it dropped an 80-77 contest to Ryerson on Saturday afternoon in Toronto.

It was a top-ten clash as the 7th-ranked Marauders faced the 8-th ranked Rams, but early on it was the home team that looked like it was ready to play as Ryerson jumped out to a 12-0 lead off the opening tip.  Behind some sharp shooting from Danielle Boiago, McMaster played even the rest of the way in the first quarter but still trailed 25-15 after 10 minutes.

The Rams continued to shoot very well in the second quarter and had the lead up to 17 before the teams went into the halftime break with Ryerson in front 49-34.

In the third quarter McMaster started to claw its way back and behind Boiago and Hilary Hanaka, the Marauders dominated the Rams and closed to within a basket at 56-54 heading to the final stanza.

The fourth quarter saw both teams go on runs with Ryerson running off 11 unanswered points early in the period to bump the lead back up to 14 at 71-57.  But McMaster responded and a furious Marauder rally saw McMaster get to within a point on two occasions but unable to tie or take the lead.   A desperation three-point attempt just before the final buzzer was off the mark.

Hanaka led the Marauders with 22 points and Boiago added 19.  Ryerson's Keneca Giles dropped a game-high 25 points.

For the second straight game, McMaster was dominated on the boards as Ryerson held a 47-34 advantage in rebounds.

The Marauders now fall to 6 and 4 and will next play Friday, January 16th at Laurentian.
