HAMILTON, Ont. — The postseason begins Wednesday night as the No. 11 seed McMaster Marauders travel to St. Catharines to face the No. 6 seed Brock Badgers in OUA First Round action at Bob Davis Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the OUA Quarterfinals.
While Brock enters as the higher seed with home-court advantage, the regular-season meetings between these two programs suggest this matchup is far tighter than the seeding indicates.
Season Series: McMaster 2-0
McMaster swept the two regular-season contests, earning both a home and road victory.
The first meeting came on Nov. 1 at Burridge Gymnasium, where the Marauders secured a 75-69 overtime win. In a tightly contested battle that featured eight ties and seven lead changes, McMaster closed strong in the extra frame, outscoring Brock 10-4 in overtime.
Sophia Urosevic led the charge with 22 points, while
Tayler Scott recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds. The Marauders dominated the glass 47-31 and generated 17 points off turnovers, setting the tone physically.
The rematch on Jan. 31 at the Meridian Centre saw McMaster deliver one of its most complete performances of the season, defeating Brock 86-72.
Grace Ammendolia scored 18 points, Scott added 15, and Urosevic contributed 14 as the Marauders shot 45.7 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three. Defensively, McMaster held Brock to just 3-for-25 from beyond the arc, limiting the Badgers to 12 percent shooting from deep.
McMaster led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter, controlling the game down the stretch.
Brock: No. 6 Seed (14-8)
The Badgers finished the regular season 14-8 overall and in conference play, earning the sixth seed in the OUA bracket. Brock went 8-3 at home this season and enters the playoffs on a two-game winning streak.
Madalyn Weinert has been a consistent presence inside. In the January matchup against McMaster, she posted 25 points and 17 rebounds. Brock thrives when establishing paint touches and second-chance opportunities, as evidenced by their 20 second-chance points in the January meeting.
For the Badgers, defending home court and improving perimeter efficiency will be central to their game plan.
McMaster: No. 11 Seed (9-13)
McMaster closes the regular season at 9-13 overall, but momentum is firmly on its side. The Marauders enter the postseason riding a five-game winning streak, playing their best basketball at the right time.
Balanced scoring has been a hallmark during this stretch, with multiple players capable of leading the offence on any given night. In the January win over Brock, five Marauders reached double figures. The team's improved shot selection and perimeter shooting have elevated its offensive ceiling, while defensive discipline has limited opponents' efficiency from three-point range.
Despite being the lower seed, McMaster has already proven it can win in St. Catharines.
Key Factors
- Rebounding Battle
- McMaster controlled the boards in the November meeting, while Brock generated significant second-chance production in January. Whichever team dictates the glass could dictate the outcome.
- Three-Point Efficiency
- The Marauders shot 10-for-22 from three in the second meeting, while holding Brock to 12 percent from deep. Perimeter defence and shot selection will again be pivotal.
- Momentum vs. Seeding
- Brock owns the higher seed and home court, but McMaster enters with confidence, having won five straight and both previous matchups.
With postseason pressure rising and familiarity between the programs, Wednesday's First Round contest promises intensity from the opening tip. The 11th-seeded Marauders will look to continue their late-season surge, while the sixth-seeded Badgers aim to defend their floor and extend their season.
One thing is certain: this matchup is far closer than the numbers beside each team's name.
