The Marauder men's rugby team improved to 2-0 on the season, Sunday, with an offence-filled 45-25 victory in Waterloo at the expense of the Warriors.
Rookie Mitch Santilli led McMaster with two tries on the day, while Mike Smith, Kieran Hurst and Rob Winegrove each touched down once. Second-year centre Jamie Leveridge successfully kicked four penalties and an equal number of converts on Sunday, bringing his point total to 20.
The two teams opened the scoring early, trading tries in a preview of the offensive onslaught that was to come. Leveridge put his first penalty of the match through the uprights to break the early deadlock, and Smith built upon it as he slashed over the end line from short range for a try that Leveridge then converted to give McMaster a 15-5 lead.
A Warrior try brought the hosts within three points later in the half, but Leveridge had the reply once again, putting another penalty through to extend the Marauders' advantage to 18-12. The second-year was the point man as McMaster burst through for its third try of the day, with Santilli picking up the loose ball after Leveridge's long run and punching it over the line.
Separation came for the visitors when they successfully pushed the maul into the endzone for a 32-18 lead, and Leveridge was clutch once again to add another penalty to the tally. His fourth penalty brought the lead to 20 points, and after Waterloo converted a try to pull within 13, Santilli scampered for his second try of the afternoon to seal the game in McMaster's favour.
The Marauders continue their extended road trip to begin the 2014 season when they return to Waterloo to battle the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday, September 14.
