The McMaster women's basketball team, ranked 6th in Canada, defeated the Carleton Ravens 65-54 on Saturday night in Ottawa to go to 2 and 0 in early season OUA action.
On a night when their top scorer had an off night, McMaster got a huge game from third-year post Clare Kenney, who scored 19 points to lead the Mac attack. Kenney's scoring outburst set a new career high, just one day after setting her previous high of 17 in the win over Ottawa Friday.
The Marauders held a 31-22 lead at halftime and held an 11 point bulge after three quarters. The lead grew to as much as 15 before Carleton made a fourth quarter run to get within five, before McMaster resumed control and closed out the 11-point win.
McMaster's usual scoring leader Danielle Boiago had a tough night, shooting only 2 of 12 and finishing with 7 points. But behind Kenney and freshman guard HIlary Hanaka, who scored 13 while providing a steady hand at the point, the Marauders were able to overcome the cold night from Boiago. The Marauders got a nice boost off the bench from Lexie Spadafora, who scored 8 points, including a critical bucket that stopped Carleton's late run and provided a cushion for the Maroon.
The Marauders will now return to Hamilton and host Lakehead in their OUA home opener on Friday, November 14. It's the first half of a double-header with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
