The McMaster women's basketball team braved the inclement weather to head down to Brock for a key division clash and brought home a 77-60 win.
The recent snowfall in the Niagara area made for a slower than normal drive to St. Catharines and the Marauders arrived late to the game, delaying the tip by 25 minutes.
McMaster got off to a quick start and jumped out to a 21-7 lead, behind 7 points from Danielle Boiago. Brock had a small run to end the quarter and after one period the Marauders were in front 26-14.
The second quarter was all Brock at the start as the Badgers drained treys on their first two possessions, and outscored McMaster 15-2 to grab a 29-28 lead. But behind Clare Kenney, who scored some tough inside points, Mac finished the period on a 17-6 run to re-take the lead at 46-34 at the intermission.
McMaster got its transition game going in the third quarter and built the margin up to 17, before ending the quarter ahead 61-46.
Brock tried to push the tempo in the final quarter and fired up numerous attempts from long-range to try and trim the Marauder lead. But the Badger shots were not falling with great regularity and McMaster opened its largest lead at 69-50. With both teams clearing their benches over the final minutes, the Maroon closed out the 77-60 victory.
Boiago finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Marauders. All five Mac starters finished in double figures, as Hilary Hanaka scored 19, Clare Kenny 13, Linnaea Harper 11 and Rachael Holmes 10. Brock was led by Melissa Tatti with 20.
Next game for McMaster is this Saturday, November 22, when the York Lions come to Hamilton. Tip-off has been moved up to 12 p.m.
