Box Score The McMaster women's volleyball team evened its OUA record with a clutch four-set victory over the visiting Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon.
The Marauders allowed Brock to jump into an early 6-3 lead, but used a balanced attack to move in front 16-14 by the technical timeout. Outside hitter Sophie Bukovec ran off seven straight points from the service line, including two aces, to help the Maroon build the margin to 22-14, with McMaster eventually taking the opening set 25-21.
The second set saw the Badgers keep pace with McMaster and the Marauders held a slim 16-15 advantage at the technical timeout. Coming out of the break, Brock was able to take a 22-20 lead and looked like it was on its way to evening the match, but it was the Marauders that rallied behind some solid defense and consistent serving to run off the last five points of the set and win 25-22.
Now leading by two sets, McMaster seemed to take its collective foot off the gas and the Badgers took advantage of some sluggish play by the Marauders. Brock raced out to an 8-2 lead and led 16-9 at the technical timeout. The margin grew to 24-10 before Brock finally closed out the set 25-13.
But the fourth set saw a reversal of form by McMaster and it was the Marauders that came out with the strong start, jumping in front 9-3 and leading 16-8 at the technical timeout. Brock made a run in the set but could only get as close as 21-15, and eventually McMaster closed out the set and the match with a 25-19 win.
The victory evens McMaster's OUA record at 4 wins and 4 losses.
The Marauders got a big match from Sophie Bukovec who scored 18 points, and was named the BIG MAC player of the game. Marauders Maicee Sorensen with 12.5 and Kierstyn Bakker with 9.5 points respectively, also had solid efforts while setter Amanda Weldon had 33 assists and spread the ball around well. Brock's Sherise Power was the Badgers' player of the game with 12.5 points.
The Marauders will hit the road next weekend for matches at Nipissing on November 22
nd and York on November 24
th.
